Abstract
The authors propose a new three-dimensional subband decomposition system for video coding applications. The basic idea is to modify traditional 3D systems so as to separate motion along opposite directions. The decomposition exploits the velocity discrimination capability of the human eye, and results in a more physically meaningful partition than traditional systems. The proposed system consists of a number of two band one-dimensional perfect reconstruction filters together with a number of two band checker board two-dimensional filters. Using synthetic and real sequences, the capability of the system to separate the direction of motion was demonstrated
