Abstract
The author outlines how the potential value of consultants lies in their independent view where they bring to bear their experience in helping the client to tackle their own safety problems and needs. In any particular case, the role that the consultant is allowed to play in practice depends on the attitudes and cultural expectations of the client set balanced by the professional skills and self-discipline of the consultant. The actual value of consultants can only be understood in such terms
