Abstract
For the UK electricity industry competition is still a relatively new development and, as yet, not universally applied. Since privatisation there has been competition for the 1 MW plus market; it will be introduced for 100 kW plus customers in 1994; and in 1998 all electricity customers will have the opportunity to shop around. In addressing the benefits of a competitive electricity market one is essentially addressing the benefits of the industry´s move from the public to the private sector. The author discusses principles involved in privatisation and the benefits they have brought to the electricity supply industry
