Abstract
The authors argue that technique now exist can form a practical framework for fault diagnosis and identification and control system reconfiguration, when used together. They propose a way of exploiting the techniques, which promises to be sufficiently fast and reliable for process applications. Much further work is required on the details, and on establishing reliability and stability of the scheme. There is no reason why the same approach should not be successful in high-bandwidth applications eventually, such as flight control
