Abstract
The author details how lightning models fall into three categories: pure geometrical constructions such as cones of protection and the rolling spheres which were introduced to British Standards in 1985; electrogeometric models, in which empirical relationships for striking distance and lightning peak current are invoked; and physical analogues, where the discharge mechanisms revealed in laboratory long sparks are extrapolated to the lightning scale
