Abstract
The author examines areas in the design of electrical machines where a knowledge based paradigm might be of help in assisting the designer to reach an optimum solution to a particular problem and to tackle those problems which are not amenable to conventional algorithms. Knowledge based techiques can form the basis of computer aided synthesis programs. Such systems can co-operate with existing analysis packages to complete an iterative design loop. The blackboard architecture provides a means of connecting the synthesis and analysis tools in an opportunistic fashion. While such systems are unlikely to replace the experienced designer because of their lack of ability to innovate, they can significantly reduce the demands on the designer to understand the computational processes and can provide an environment which encourages creativity
