Abstract
Extensive research at the authors´ university on microcontroller based PWM techniques has resulted in the development of a novel generalised algorithm for real-time applications and also highlighted the possibility of knowledge-based control strategies coupled with on-line calculated waveforms. These provide for extremely fine control, impossible with older systems based on the use of switching angle look-up tables. This project, part of an on-going research in the development of a generalised drives controller, investigates the problems associated with online condition monitoring of PWM drives and no information as such is available in the literature. Since the PWM drives are widely used in industry and the concept of condition monitoring is becoming a necessity, this work provides valuable information
