Abstract
The paper is concerned with medium access control in public MANs. It describes a generalization of the DQDB protocol which leads to improved medium access control. It is well known that the DQDB protocol can potentially be unfair in its allocation of capacity to competing users in large overloaded MAN networks, (queued arbitrated access). The generalized DQDB protocol, called Reactive DQDB described herein, has been tested on a specially built simulator. Test results indicate that it has considerable advantage over the bandwidth balancing mechanism which is incorporated in the IEEE 802.6 MAC draft standard for public MANs
