Abstract :
The author describes the approach of the PROMETHEUS programme, which started in 1986 by an initiative of the automotive industry in the framework of the EUREKA platform, which is to consider vehicles as active elements integrated in road traffic and part of a whole transport system, which should be possible to optimize in terms of safety and efficiency. The basic concept is to establish the necessary links among the driver, the vehicle, the driving and traffic environment as well as the transport system
