Abstract :
The authors look at the various choices that faced a pipeline operator in the selection of pumping equipment to increase the throughput of a pipeline from 600000 barrels/day to over 1,000,000. The pipeline, the Forties crude export pipeline, carries North Sea oil from landfall at Cruden Bay to the refinery at Grangemouth in central Scotland. The analysis discusses the selection of the 6 MW variable speed drives and considers their effect on the incoming supply and on the driven equipment
