Abstract
This paper mainly reports experience obtained during the four years of the project IBREHT (Interaction of the Body with Radiated Emissions from Handheld Transceivers), in which both computer modelling and physical measurements were undertaken. The physical measurements largely served to validate the computer models, and hence discussion here concentrates on the latter. The principal object of the work was the creation and validation of a procedure for determining the interaction of a mobile telephone handset with the human head and hand, so that compliance with safety standards could be demonstrated. It was reasoned that it would be desirable to aim for as great a degree of realism as could be achieved, in order to make the demonstration of compliance credible to nonspecialists. The finite-difference time-domain method was selected as the most appropriate computational approach and thus a high resolution (small size of the FDTD cells) was a priority, in order to maximise realism
