Abstract :
A shortage of trained and experienced people, the lack of an industrial culture, special problems and priorities, and an absence of role models make the development of production managers in Ethiopia a unique and difficult challenge. To address this challenge, in 1980 the Ethiopian Management Institute designed and implemented an innovative program of results-oriented management development. This program is now in its tenth year and is having a substantial measurable impact on the Ethiopian industrial sector. The author discusses the 1986-90 period of the program, which focused on waste reduction and productivity awareness
