Abstract :
Summary form only given. The author presents the results of a year-long study conducted in the Galician region in Spain. A total of 52 Galician innovating firms were included in the study. Business environment, strategy, organizational structure, decision making, managing organizational change, reward criteria, and control system were evaluated in all firms. The origin of innovating firms, the emergence of research ideas and the formal R&D department, the management of R&D, and aids and barriers to innovations were studied in detail. Methodologies used in the study were based on performing top management interviews that were combined with data obtained from the firms involved. The results showed a characteristic in common: the origin of these firms is family-based, and private capital is the more important promoter. These families have continuance in the development of the firms, and although their natural evolution takes them to a larger size and complexity, they keep themselves closely involved in the management of the companies
