Abstract
Shoreline information extraction and change detection using remotely sensed imageries is of great significance to local comprehensive coastal management. Using the Landsat MSS/TM images acquired in 1979, 1985, 2000, and 2005 respectively, the shorelines of Hangzhou Bay in China were detected with an integrated method of GIS, image enhancement, unsupervised classification, and map generalization. Further, the fractal dimension of each shoreline was computed and the shoreline change across 26 years was investigated systematically. Moreover, amongst the whole shoreline of Hangzhou Bay, 6 representative sections (i.e. Southern Ningbo, Shaoxing, Northern Jiaxing, Jinshan, Fengxian, and Luchaogang) experienced drastic changes were selected and analyzed in detail.
