Abstract
In this paper we report for the first time a detailed study of the performance of EDFA preamplified receivers employing a FBG as an optical filter. A comprehensive moment generating function treatment is developed and used to present new results evaluating the noise levels, receiver sensitivity, and power penalties as functions of the EDFA and FBG parameters. The results are obtained for a 10 Gb/s EDFA receiver, with a 6.5 GHz electrical bandwidth employing a FBG as an optical bandpass filter with a bandwidth of 13 GHz, the results are presented for a 10 Gbit/s optical preamplifier. The results obtained show that a sensitivity improvement of about 12 dB can be achieved when using an EDFA with a FBG as the optical filter. This sensitivity improvement is in relation to a system that employs a simple transimpedance receiver. A range of results is presented showing the effect of the FBG bandwidth on the system performance
