Abstract
The paper describes the activities of Alcatel SEL and her subsidiary Alcatel SEL RFT in the states Kazakhstan and Russia regarding stationary DC power plants. The Hanover fair "CeBIT" of 1992 was the starting point with the signing of some important contracts with the Telecommunication Ministry of Kazakhstan. Everything began with a training exchange of the digital switching system S12 in Alma Ata. The planning of the telecom network was performed in cooperation between our company and an institute which belongs to the Ministry of Telecommunication. Also some private networks were established, f.i. with a copper mine in Balkhash. Until the end of 1993 nearly 100 switching stations were raised in 10 of the 19 "oblast" of the country. In Russia it will be around 20 stations. The C.I.S. state\´s telecommunication system voltage is -60V, like in Austria, Germany and some countries which were influenced by the former Soviet Union. Besides the stations for switching and transmission equipment a mobile radio network (GSM) and network of radio link connections with the system RURTEL was established and this had its own specialities. Of course, DC power plants were the main part of our activities, but also batteries and UPS, the latter for control centers and local service facilities. For the RURTEL repeaters and subscriber stations in nearly all cases solar supply was used. GSM, some ISDN-networks and RURTEL operate with -48V on the DC-site.
