Abstract
The design and development of UMTS will be influenced, to some degree, by the outcome and conclusions generated by the RACE II CODIT project. The paper points out the spectrum requirements of the CODIT system concept and then compares those requirements with the spectrum identified for UMTS. The paper then discusses whether high bit rate data services require new spectrum and whether this leads to dual mode radio interfaces. Finally timescales for UMTS roll out are considered
