Abstract
In this paper we develop a theoretical framework for multimedia aided engineering (MMAE) and how such environments support designers. We first look at how computers are used in engineering design. We discuss what multimedia is and define hyper-MM (HY-MM). Then we discuss the design process, its steps and the participants involved, and how MM fits in this process. Uses of HY-MM in design are explained and exemplified. Some examples of how HY-MM can be integrated in MMAE are given. Finally we look at problems, and limitations in using HY-MM for design and how these can be solved in the MMAE system of the future
