Abstract
The demand for uninterrupted telecommunications when commuting between home and office, by public transport, and when on holiday, has brought about an explosion in requirements for mobile equipment. In this context, the pocket terminal is becoming a universal and indispensable facility. It should be designed as a light and cheap device that everybody can carry around. The power supply is one of the main problems of miniaturization. It has to be lightweight and small with the greatest possible endurance, taking into account the typical working characteristics for this new range of products. The new electrochemical couples proposed promise eventual solutions to all these problems. The battery couples proposed are: Ni-Cd, Ni-MH, Ni-Zn, and Li ions
