Abstract :
A temporal noise reduction algorithm is proposed. The algorithm is designed to be used as a preprocessor for an MPEG type of encoder to further enhance the coding performance of the codec. In the proposed algorithm, a adaptive motion compensated temporal filter is constructed based on the spacial structure of the MPEG coding algorithm, particularly, the motion information and frame store used in the coding. The advantage of this approach is that by fully utilizing the available memory storage and motion information of the MPEG encoder, the preprocessor can achieve a maximum noise reduction while keeping the implementation cost and delay time at a minimum. An average 30% bit-reduction can be achieved at the encoder by using the proposed algorithm for the preprocessor in our experiment
