Abstract
A class of median-type filters called matched median filters is defined for the estimation of the information which is carried by the amplitude of a noisy signal. These filters form the natural counterpart of linear matched filters in the class of median-type filters. Matched median filters are defined both for baseband and passband systems, and their statistical properties are analyzed. It is shown that a weighted vector median filter can be used to solve the corresponding estimation problem for complex and bandpass signals
