Abstract
A new method is introduced for imaging modal shapes of a mechanical heart valve, based on the radiation force of ultrasound. Vibro-acoustography is used to excite resonant modes in heart valve prosthesis. A theory is developed that predicts that the resulting acoustic emission pressure is proportional to the value of the mode shape at the focal point of the ultrasound beam. Experimental studies were carried out on a mechanical heart valve. The first two modal shapes were imaged by the method and the results agree well with FEM simulation using Abaqus®. The method can be applied to non-destructive testing and evaluation of vibration modes of small objects.
