Abstract
This paper introduces the concept of elementary observers for nonlinear systems. In the case of single input bilinear systems we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of such observers. Both linear and bilinear error dynamic cases are investigated. A complete characterization of the observation space is done within the tools of the geometric framework
