Abstract
The requirement for a pan-European digital private mobile radio system has been recognized for some time and has resulted in a standardisation activity at the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). The main technical features of the resultant European standard (TETRA) are outlined. The principle physical layer challenges which must be met in the design of terminal equipment are then discussed
