Abstract
In the early 1980s a major steel pipe producer was able to turn an unprofitable business into a revenue producer by changing the culture of the operation through the use of the Deming philosophy, involving the following four steps: commitment by top and middle management to change the corporate culture for the better; communication throughout the organization to help solve the designated problems; constancy of purpose; control of the processes by learning what to do and when and how to do it; continuation of training in statistical methods. The effect of this plan not only resolved the immediate problems facing the company but permanently changed the outlook of management in the method of approaching its problems
