Abstract
The authors present an overview of ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) target network architectures, requirements, and typical configurations of ATM network elements in the context of ATM field trials. They discuss a modular concept which meets the diverse requirements of different administrations with regard to the types and features of network elements. The concept presented can easily be extended to cope with future requirements for ATM products based on international standards which are still evolving
