  • Abstract
The IMASS (intelligent multiple access spectrum sharing) methodology identifies shared spectrum channel segments which may be used for PCNs (personal communications networks) without causing harmful interference to incumbent users. The IMASS system encompasses a measurement system and an algorithm to identify PCN frequency channels which may be used within a PCN microcell cluster. This methodology does not rely on complex propagation models or detailed three-dimensional building databases to determine the available noninterfering spectrum. The IMASS methodology also simplifies and accelerates PCN network planning and deployment, interference coordination, and PCN installation. The measurement-based IMASS system automatically compensates for fixed microwave link configuration changes, new building construction, climate, and foliage effects. Because of the high IMASS receiver sensitivity, it provides an extra degree of interference protection in high density areas
