  • Abstract
A novel time and wavelength division multiple access (T/WDMA) scheme for an optical metropolitan area network based on a passive star is used. This scheme supports circuit switched traffic in an environment with a large number of users and a large number of applications with a relatively small bandwidth requirement (e.g., voice and compressed video). The scheme uses subframe tuning and pipelining in order to compensate for the relatively slow tuning speed of optical devices currently available. An analytical model is presented for the uniform, single rate point-to-point traffic case. The performance results illustrate the properties and effectiveness of the proposed T/WDMA scheme
