Abstract
The field of ldquosmart surveillancerdquo is an upcoming research area with a lot of work published in the last decade. Perfect segmentation of moving humans from security videos is still a challenge because of lighting variations which causes moving cast shadows in the video. In this paper, we propose a novel technique for the computation of ldquoillumination thresholdrdquo using the idea of frame ratio for shadow-less object segmentation. The method uses an adaptive threshold specific to the characteristics of the current video frame being processed and it is found to show an improvement over the previous models of segmentation using hard threshold. Experimental results for a variety of surveillance video are shown and compared with other previous works to validate the robustness of the proposed method.
