Abstract
There are several methods of speed measurement for F1 applications. In this paper, two measurement systems realized for this aim, a GPS-based and a contact-less sensor based one, are presented. The theoretical disadvantages and practical risks for each solution are described. Particular attention is focused on the solution based on contact-less optical speed sensor, currently considered the best way to satisfy the requirements of the very harsh racing environment. The first results of laboratory experiments carried out using such sensor, show possible short-term improvements.
