Abstract
This report is a summary of the conclusions and recommendations of an Interagency Workshop held June 3-5, 1986 at Annapolis, MD. The workshop focused on analytical methods and monitoring strategies which should be used to determine the concentrations of organotin (OT) species, particularly butyltins, in aquatic environments. It was recommended that primary emphasis be placed on determining concentrations of OT in whole-water samples. Nine candidate methods were identified and characterized as to limit of detection, rate at which samples can be processed, and volume of sample required for analysis. These methods generate results which are reproducible within a range of +/- 15% and measure concentrations of individual butyltin species at the nanograms per liter (ng/L) level. A two-tiered monitoring strategy was developed to evaluate contamination on a national scale as well as in-depth examination of a small number of areas.
