Abstract
The ARDC REEF PROFILES data base is a catalog of permitted reef sites in U.S. waters. This includes sites where active reefs already exist and those which have been permitted and are simply awaiting suitable materials. Artificial reefs are identified by location and described in terms of physical biological, and hydrological conditions, reef size and configuration, materials used, proximity to shore, and other information relevant to sponsors and reef users. REEF PROFILES provides a framework for artificial reef categorization and evaluation so developers can choose structures suited to provide for multiple use of national coastal zone and seafloor areas. REEF PROFILES provides a mechanism for reviewing reef case histories and structures that have been employed in past projects. By analyzing the REEF PROFILES data base, systematic evaluation of reef structures can be accomplished, leading to effective artificial reef development in the future.
