  • Abstract
This paper presents a systematic approach for the qualification of digital equipment for operation in the electromagnetic environment of a nuclear power plant. This paper describes how nuclear plants have been addressing equipment immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI) in the past and how current recommended immunity levels for the nuclear plants were determined through a survey of electromagnetic emissions levels in nuclear plants. Practices to limit EMI in equipment areas are discussed. Recommendations for limiting the electromagnetic emissions levels of new equipment are also presented. The paper summarizes the overall recommendations for EMI qualification presented in EPRI report TR-102323, which was developed by a Working Group consisting of representatives from Utilities, EPRI, and Industry. This same approach can be applied to analog equipment and extended to similar environments in all types of facilities
