Abstract
A classification scheme for ocean industries in Hawaii is developed that consists of six existing and three emerging industries. The existing industries include aquaculture, commercial fishing, ocean research, seafood marketing, ocean recreation, and maritime; the emerging industries include marine mining, marine biotechnology, and ocean energy. The industries are sufficiently discrete to be marketed and developed as specific entities and to have uniquely defined constituencies. Using this scheme, an ocean industry portfolio model is developed to better visualize the relative attributes of these industries and to help formulate strategies for ocean industry development in Hawaii.
