Abstract
ATM internetworks represent a significant reduction in internetwork complexity and an increase in capability when compared to conventional internetworks. Of course, the move to ATM-based networks will not occur overnight. Not every network client requires the advanced features that are provided by ATM. Furthermore, few organizations can afford a wholesale replacement of their entire network infrastructure. Nevertheless, network designers must plot a course to tomorrow´s networks without making today´s investment obsolete. This paper presents a cost-effective migration strategy that provides the required advanced capabilities of ATM-based networks while preserving investment in conventional networking technologies
