Abstract :
Since the discovery of ternary bulk metallic glasses (BMG) of the Fe-Y-B system, much effort has been bestowed in our Lab to enhance the glass forming ability (GFA) and soft magnetic properties by the modification of a fourth element, such as Nb or Ta. It was found that Nb stabilizes the competing Fe23B6 phase in Fe-B based BMG leading to deteriorated GFA. Ta was thus chosen to partly replace Y and the effects on thermal, magnetic and mechanical properties of the resultant BMG were explored.
