Abstract :
The problem of achieving electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) between pulsed Nd:YAG lasers and collocated sensors on stabilized platforms is discussed. This problem is a result of inappropriate electromagnetic interference (EMI) requirements and insufficient tests at the unit level prior to system integration. As a consequence, the system integrator is unable to accurately predict EMC problems, assess tradeoff considerations and take appropriate action to achieve EMC until the system has been integrated, when it is too late to make changes that totally correct the problem. EMC requirements are proposed along with a simple test method that can be conducted in the laboratory or in the field, at the unit and at the system level, to aid in achieving EMC. These are compared to the RE01, RS01, and RS02-11 requirements of MIL-STD-461C which are not appropriate for collocated pulsed Nd:YAG lasers and sensors.<>
