Abstract
This paper investigates the dynamics of the nonlinear closed-loop adaptive scheme proposed by Byrnes and Willems (1984) using a detailed series expansion solution of the special case of closed loop dynamics in R 3 projected onto R 2. It is demonstrated that the series expansion approach can be used to explicitly calculate initial conditions where the adaptive controllers converge to destabilizing limit gains
