  • Abstract
As the technology of adjustable speed drives (ASDs) matured, possibilities for technical breakthroughs slowly decreased. In response, most of the research in this field is pursuing increasingly esoteric topics in search of opportunities for original contributions. This paper presents a view from industry of the remaining highly relevant research problems, the solution of which would represent significant contributions. Research opportunities in both low and medium voltage drives are explored and the impact of developments in drive supporting technologies is assessed
