Abstract :
Computer data links employing high reliability CD-type lasers operating at 780 nm have become quite popular over the past few years because they have made high data rate fiber links affordable. A new optical source, the Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL), is now becoming available with similar characteristics to the current CD-type laser. However, the VCSEL promises the added advantages of higher data rates (up to 5 Gb/s), surface emitting structure to provide for wafer level testing which reduces manufacturing costs and narrow beam emission to provide simplified coupling into multimode fibers. Today´s standard link specifications provide for complete interoperability between popular CD-type lasers (780 nm) and the new 850 nm VCSEL devices now arriving in the marketplace
