Author_Institution :

Abstract :
This paper addresses the potential impact of digital technology within broadcasting in the area of archives and media asset management. It considers how developments in digital storage and distribution technologies are key enablers of change, which can deliver benefits of reduced operational costs and increased exploitation of media assets. In particular, it looks at how the implementation of digital technology offers opportunities for introducing new methods of managing media assets at the beginning of the production chain and the subsequent impact on library working practices within the newsroom, production area and the archive. It concludes by considering how the creation of the digital archive can result in numerous opportunities for increased revenue generation, through a combination of more effective exploitation of media assets and a growing demand for content in a range of new applications
