Abstract :
The Portable Computer-based Maintenance Aids System II (PCMAS II) was developed to provide a vehicle for testing automation concepts for use in onboard aircraft maintenance. System requirements included a high-resolution, flat-panel display capable of presenting complex graphics, suitable for use under a wide variety of lighting conditions, and having a low power-consumption rate. To meet the requirements, an advanced liquid-crystal display (LCD) was developed. The display technology and its application to the PCMAS are described. The basic principles of LCD technology are reviewed, and the active-matrix multiplex technology selected for the PCMAS II is explained in detail. In the prototype LCD, the active viewing area is about 8 inches by 6 inches in size. It has a fluorescent back light that is operated with a manual switch. The resolution is about 81 pixels per inch with an aspect ratio of 1:1
