Abstract
The origins of radio are intimately bound up with the use of sparks for generating electromagnetic waves. This has important implications for the forms of early transmitters and receivers. At the beginning of the era it was not known whether such waves existed, how to generate them or how to detect them. The advances achieved were very much the product of complementary developments along all three lines
