Abstract :
A photonic frequency up-converter based on cross polarization modulation (XPolM) effect in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) was experimentally demonstrated. Optical radio frequency (RF) signals (fRF = 57 GHz and 63 GHz) were generated by mixing an optical local oscillator (LO) signal (fLO = 60 GHz) with an optical intermediate frequency (IF) signal (fIF = 3 GHz) in the inverted mode and non-inverted modes. The positive conversion efficiency of 8.76 dB was achieved in the inverted mode.
