Abstract
This paper discusses the possibilities, benefits and problems of implementing an integrated storage and transmission system using general purpose computer servers. It demonstrates the general suitability of this approach for certain situations. The lower bandwidth and storage requirements make this applicable today for audio servers, and the basic system is extensible to video; the only limitation on using this technology today for video transmission being the cost and capacity of on-line storage which is rapidly changing. Points are illustrated using the Digital Music System developed for Music Choice Europe by Logica
