Abstract
A 2D sensor array based on microstrip-excited Split Ring Resonators (SRR) is used to monitor local changes in the dielectric properties of organic tissue. The split rings are designed to have different resonant frequencies and are decoupled from each other to allow the extraction of a spatial distribution in two dimensions where a frequency shift of one individual resonant peak will indicate the dielectric properties of the MUT and its location within the array. An additional 2D sensor array prototype will also be presented, where the feeding microstrip line is located on a separate substrate layer to prevent any influence from it in the sensing area of the sensor and a comparison between the two geometries is made. The prototype has been tested with dielectric reference bricks and animal lung tissue to prove the concept.
