Abstract :
Mobile and portable computers such as PDAs have become a ubiquitous commodity, accompanying their users wherever they go, and for nearly every activity. On the other hand, there is an increasing need for informal learning that can take place for example in interactive learning spaces such as museums. One such example is the Exploratorium. We introduce the MANAS agent-based software based solution that enables users to use their own PDAs as mobile electronic guidebooks. Using MANAS, the users can explore and learn further details on topics being described in interactive learning spaces. MANAS framework adapts the retrieved content on the fly to suite the needs of the PDA. In contrast to our software based solution, current mobile electronic guidebooks solutions, e.g. the solution provided at the Exploratorium, provide users retrofitted hardware that enables museum visitors to learn more about the museum exhibits. In addition, such solutions need to include additional hardware at each exhibit. In our solution, since we use the visitors´ own communication device there is no need for equipment purchase, upgrades or maintenance leading to significant cost savings.
