Abstract :
Permanent magnet (PM) motors are favored for electric traction applications due to their high efficiency. The paper proposes an enhanced wheel internal permanent magnet (IPM) motor offering the advantages of PM machines along with excellent torque performance and high power density. The advantage of the proposed scheme is the high magnetic flux developed in the air gap which allows much higher values of magnetic flux density, compared to a surface PM machine of the same size. This IPM motor aims to efficiently utilize the energy stored in the PM, where high load and intense transient phenomena occur, in electrical traction applications, while keeping a simple and robust structure.
