Abstract
This paper focuses on the implementation of a connectionless servers overlay network on top of an ATM based transport network. Major attention is given to the bandwidth management of ATM virtual paths connecting the connectionless servers. To guarantee the requested QOS in a switched ATM network scenario, the network design requires the assignment of some bandwidth to the connection oriented traffic. Using a pre-emptive policy, we describe how to take advantage of `free bandwidth´ temporarily left `not allocated´, but still dedicated to connection oriented traffic. Moreover we evaluate the advantage given by free bandwidth allocation policy in conjunction with different alternate routing algorithms
