Abstract
The author presents a spline-based approximation method which can be used to estimate unknown variable coefficients, boundary parameters and initial conditions in certain moving boundary problems of one spatial dimension. He discusses convergence of approximate parameter estimates and the numerical implementation of the method, using as an example a model for the penetration of solvents into polymers
